Tucked in an industrial district just outside downtown Salt Lake City, you’ll find the local climber’s bouldering gym of choice: The Front. People don’t climb at the Front because it’s an upscale, fancy gym. They climb there because it’s where most of the best climbers in town meet up to train and to plan their next big adventure.
Recently, the Front gave itself a makeover by replacing the old and boring top-rope area with a new state-of-the-art cave built by Vertical Solutions. This new area of the wall is different than any other in the gym because it has a consistently steep angle from bottom to top.
When the new section of the wall was about to open, we got a call from the Front about making a fun video to officially announce the wall being open to the public. The goal of the video was just to show how the wall climbed and to get people excited to come try it out. Here’s the final version of the video we produced for them:
Because there wasn’t much of a storyline we needed to tell, we wanted to focus on keeping the cameras moving, and create a dramatic look. Ideally we would have shot this at night, but because of logistics we had to shoot it early in the morning when light was blasting in through the enormous windows next to the wall. We shut off all the other lights in the gym and used the window as one big key light, and then we boosted the contrast up a bit by putting a light in front of the window.
